Oakland California: Is a car needed?
Is a car necessary for those living in Oakland, or does the city have a reliable public transportation system? I imagine that San Fran's proximity to Oakland is somewhat similar to Manhattan's proximity to Brooklyn, is this incorrect? Could one easily live in Oakland, and work/commute/play in San Fran on the daily basis(Similar to a person living in one of the NYC boroughs commuting to work in Manhattan) or would it be a huge hassle?

Yes, there is public transportation and the easiest way to get to San Fran is on Bart. I have a few friends that live in oakland and don't have cars, and they work in san fran or in nearby city's and they get around just fine. People are ignorant about Oakland, yeah there are some bad parts, but its a big city and the whole town isnt hood. Thats just irritating

Oakland has a decent bus system, and the BART train goes directly into San Francisco. While it's not as good as Brooklyn, a car is not necessary.
