i live in oakland. its not that bad. its portrayed badly but there are good things too. like, diversity!

Oakland really is not that bad. Yes there are a few neighborhoods that have big time problems, but overall it is not that bad of place. I used to drive a motor courier route through there, and only had one problem in four years. A guy jumped into my truck and needed a ride, I obliged. That was 20 years ago, I lived to talk about it.

Oakland is bad, but not that bad. West Oakland is a lot better than East. True the schools are very bad. There is a lot of crime, and I usually don't go there a whole lot. None the less it has it's good areas.

Those are all bad instances, but that kind of thing happens in many cities, or at least is not uncommon to us in California. I've been to Oakland many times and never felt that I should be in danger... It's not like it's portrayed. Bad things happen everywhere all over the country... It's unfortunate those incidents happen, but it certainly does not stop people from using a certain store or gas station. I live in Fresno and was walking across the street to my friends house and a shooting took place down the street. Two teens died, but it doesn't stop me from driving on that street. I think you face it, and move on. Keep your nose out of people's business and you'll be fine

Call them and ask although I'd bet my pension on the fact that you don't have one. You never worked long enough or paid into the pension plan long enough to qualify for any sort of payout. You may have been able to get some sort of return of contributions way back then but not now.

I'd say it is highly unlikely you are owed anything from the City Pension. In general, pension plan vesting since 1987 has required at least 5 years of service. Prior to 1976, most plans required much longer to get a benefit. Also, minimum age requirements were commonplace prior to 1976 and age 30 was used as eligibility date for many plans. So if you worked there in your 20's you may not have ever even been offered entry into the plan. In a CA public pension plan, you generally are required to contribute your own money to participate. With such a short length of service they most likely returned your contributions when you left.

I'm not sure if anyone from the area will be reading this, but just in case... My boyfriend and I are thinking of buying a condo in San Ramon. I work in Oakland and have to go to Concord about twice a week in the evening. In my experience, 580 & 680 are really heavy traffic areas during commute hours. Is this true? I usually start work between 7am-9am in Oakland & Commute to Concord around 6pm. Thanks for any help you may have! Also, if you don't know the area but happen to know if a site that shows realistic drive time with typical traffic, that would be really helpful too!

yeah it gets thick during commute hours. going towards S.F. in the morning and going away S.F. in the evening is a bottleneck. If you go against the flow it's not so bad though.

Hello, We are planning to relocate for my work at Oakland, CA. I got to know that in many California districts (including Oakland)school bus transportation is restricted to special education students only. Other students need to use pubic transport. I am very much concerned about this and wanted to know which districts(or schools) near Oakland have school buses running for all students. Can someone also direct me to related website as well which has all this information? Any information will be greatly appreciated. While one of my child is in elementary school the other one will be going to middle school this year. I wanted school bus transportation for both. Thanks Tonalc for mentioning about Berkeley. In Berkeley school bus is not for middle school as per their website. Is there any option?

Oakland... to live in, or not to live in?
Hey everybody, I am a senior in college, born and raised in NY state, considering moving to the Bay area and getting a job out there working with underserved youth. My job will probably be located in Oakland or somewhere near there on the east bay. I was originally thinking of living in San Francisco proper but I have been researching rent prices and I don't think I can afford it... haha. So what about living and working in Oakland? Is Oakland a good city to live in? What parts of Oakland are the "good" or "safe" areas to live in? What parts would you recommend not moving into? I'm not from the area and I don't want to look for apartments in areas that aren't safe! Oh.... and does Oakland have the same amazing transportation system that San Francisco has? I do not have a car. I need to be able to get around the city, to and from work and anywhere else I need to go. Also, when I try to search for apartments online, all I get are these ugly tower buildings that are like 20 stories high, very commercial looking. Surely some people in the bay area must live in houses, even in NYC people live in houses! So if you can navigate me to some websites where I can look for apartments that don't look like they are part of the Holiday Inn, that would be great. Thanks!

There are some nice areas in Oakland like Oakland Hills

There are some good and not so good areas of Oakland. The areas you might want to consider are Grand lake, Lake Merritt, and Montclaire. Berkeley also is a good area near Oakland. Public transportation is better in SF but there are options in the East Bay and depending on where you live and distance to work a bicycle can be a good option. I don't know where you are looking at housing on line but it is very possible to rent an apartment in a house or even rent a house [if your budget allows] in the East Bay. You might want to check out the rental listing on Craig's List as you can search by budget, area and type of apartment. http://www.craigslist.org

No, it's not. My husband and I live in the bay area....he was raised here. His parents left communist Europe when my husband was 5 years old...with only the clothes on their back. They had to move to Austria, and then to Germany, and then on to America....it took them 10 years almost to get here. With nothing, and no other family to help. They moved to the bay area, did not speak any English or know anyone. His parents divorced, he lived in a 1 room apartment with a father that worked all the time and had sole custody, in a bad area....and they were determined, and humble. His father now owns a house in Novato and my husband worked his way through a masters at Berkeley....with no help. It's not the town you live in, it's your drive, spirit, and dedication. Although I'm American, his family had more will power and drive than anyone in MY family ever did. I always heard the same excuse....born into a crappy family in a crappy town. It's not true...it's how determined you are. You have to be focused. Your father should be a great story for you. Kudo's to him.

no, its not imposible. you have not really met this one guy that comes to our school. He was raised in a hellish environment, was on the run from a crazy government, pretty much the africa crazyness, but eventually made it to america, and is very successful now.

It's not impossible! It doesn't matters where you're from, what really matters is the strong determination that you have that'll help you do more to reach your goals. I really admire your father for that, he's like my dad. I think the reason why others can't do it is because they limit themselves, they stick to the idea that they can only do this or that, or that they're not doing anything. Nothing's really impossible if you put your heart into it, prayers would also help.. Tip: The mind plays an important role.

I think it's impossible for some. Some people have personal responsibilities that may keep them from being able to succeed. Others might just not be smart enough. Many people just don't have the ability to make good decisions in their life. You make enough crummy decisions and you've blown it. Your father sounds like an exceptional person. Don't degrade what he's done by saying that anyone can do it.

Yes it is, everything is possible, people just need understanding. Anyone can achieve something if they set thier mind to it, weather they are disabled, poor, shy, etc. There's a thing called, 'Moving forward from where you are', some people can only achieve things if they just move forward that extra bit, (Trying harder). "Overcoming fears". This is why a lot of people haven't achieved what they wanted, because of lack of motivation, or they just can't see themselves getting anywhere in life, so they don't bother. And some would rather have a good happy social life then working hard and realising that it could be a waste of time. Being where you live can have an impact, too, as some places just don't provide the opportunities. I live in Leicester and in order to get the job related to my degree, I have to move to London or something, because in Leicester, there's only factory jobs, driving, retailing, waitressing, just practical jobs. I want to be a designer, and it's really annoying and unfair. Also growing up in a certain environment can have an impact too. But nothing is impossible, anyone can achieve anything.

People, Asians, Whites and Arabs in Oakland work hard and save to own their stores and maintain their property and don't need a bunch of untamed Blacks rioting and destroying their stores and property. The National Guard should be sent to Oakland and shoot to kill without questions asked! Oakland needs a Mayor like Rizzo was in Philadelphia. He knew how to handle the Blacks. If this were Italy the Police and Army would have crushed this rebellion. We need more tough Mayors like Rizzo and Giuliani.

Now what you said is racist in its own. Sure I agree whore-heartedly with you that riots aren't the way to solve these kinds of things but you also have to take into consideration that a life was lost because of racial profiling. If these so called "untamed blacks" know the only way to speak their freedom is to riot, then so be it. But be prepared to stop them, without "shoot to kill without questions asked", because that is exactly what happened in the Oscar Grant situation.

Being emotional and protesting is understandable. I don't disagree with the move but expressing their emotions in rage against random innocent victims is wrong. Not only will these protesters not gain more support but resentment from victims who could care less about the shooting now. Small business owners have to pay around 600 dollars to repair windows and thousands of dollars for vehicle/property damages. I saw a women broke down in tears when she saw her car was burning in flames. I have relatives living in Oakland and they're frightened to go outside or leave sight of their properties. I'm more infuriated with these violent riots than showing sympathy for the death of Oscar. These so called protesters want justice but then they go do something entirely unjust on innocent victims. If this keeps up, I might have to agree with you, send out the army and take action to immobilize these bad guys.

im from oakland, and i know how tough it can be to live out there. there are too many murders committed by the citizens already, we look to people like the police to help us, so when an officer, who is suppose to protect us, kills one of our people...yes, we get angry. this man cannot get away with this. it's not just the fact that he killed this poor man, it's the fact that this cop is out free, still alive, living his day-to-day life like nothing ever happened. i do agree that Oakland should stop the riots and just protest peacefully, but that just how the people in Oakland behave.

They need better play at the corner opposite Asomugha, and a run stuffing defensive tackle. Routt and Johnson aren't bad, but they are more of a nickel and dime corners versus starters. John Henderson seems to be passed his prime, and Tommy Kelly is better at rushing the passer than he is at stopping the run. But their first priority should be to resign Richard Seymour, and work from there.
